Our Beverly Hills gastroenterologist recommends the use of stress balls to reduce the pain and discomfort of undergoing surgeries that use a localized anesthetic. Focusing on the stress ball helps us relax, much like how talking to a friendly nurse can reduce anxiety levels during uncomfortable medical situations.
These types of distraction techniques have been the focus of an ongoing research study conducted by the University of Surrey in Great Britain.
Stress Ball Technique
The British doctors conducted the study with a number of patients undergoing surgery for varicose veins. The patients were divided into two groups – one with stress balls and the other without. Patients who squeezed stress balls showed significantly lower instances of pain or discomfort. According to research leader, Dr. Jane Ogden, the squeeze ball technique can be used for any medical, outpatient procedure where the patient remains conscious. Our Beverly Hills gastroenterologist finds this method perfect for a colonoscopy or hysteroscopy examination.
“The use of simple distraction techniques can significantly improve patient experience,” says Dr. Jane.
Oddly, the same study also shows that having a loved one in the room as the patient undergoes the procedure tends to increase pain rather than diminish it. So the next time you find yourself heading to an anxiety-producing doctor’s visit, consider leaving your significant other at home. Take a stress ball instead!
