Are you keeping up with the latest news about colon cancer prevention? Our Beverly Hills colonoscopy doctor has learned that an over-the-counter drug has shown some promise for reducing colon cancer risk. According to one study, aspirin might be one way to reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.
This placebo-controlled study included almost 39,000 middle-aged women. One group received placebos, while the second group received 100 milligrams of aspirin on alternating days. Researchers followed up with the participants almost 20 years later to determine any difference in the rate of colon cancer between the two groups. Surprisingly, they found that the rate of colon cancer was about 20% lower for the aspirin group.
Results Should Be Interpreted with Caution
However, doctors are not necessarily going to begin recommending aspirin use for colon cancer prevention in healthy patients any time soon. In the study, the overall death rate from all causes and risk of cancer was not lower for those taking aspirin. In addition, about 400 participants reported peptic ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding despite the tiny dose involved. Patients should consult with their doctors to see if the benefits of taking aspirin will outweigh potential side effects. This might be the case for individuals with a family history of colon cancer who are typically at higher risk.
What’s the Best Prevention for Colon Cancer?
We recommend a healthy lifestyle with exercise, a nutritious diet, good weight management, and no smoking. For patients age 50 or older (45+ for African American patients and those with a family history of polyps), the most effective prevention is a colonoscopy. This screening test is done on an outpatient basis and usually takes less than 30 minutes.
