Beverly Hills colonoscopy doctor, Dr. Peyton Berookim, likes to “scope out” the latest inventions that could improve patient care. What’s happening right now in medical research on the East Coast may someday affect patients all the way in Los Angeles. Read below for more details on 3D colonoscopy.
A New Way to Find Lesions
Photometric stereo endoscopy is designed to highlight even slight changes in texture in the lining of the colon. The 3D topographical computer images are generated by shining three or more different light sources on a surface and measuring changes in how the light is reflected. This greater depth perception might allow gastroenterologists to more easily see areas of abnormal tissue – including lesions that are flatter than typical polyps. This is exciting news in the endeavor to prevent colon cancer.
Is 3D Colonoscopy Available for Patients?
Not yet. So far, the scientists have created a couple of prototypes (including one the size of a traditional colonoscopy). They have tested the equipment using a silicone model of a colon, but have not started human testing yet. There will be clinical trials in Spain and Massachusetts. It will take some time to perfect the technology and determine how well it works. Only long-term testing will tell whether this novel equipment will reduce colon cancer rates by providing better detection than traditional methods. In order to be approved by the FDA for all U.S. patients, the “3D” equipment must be shown to be safe and effective first.
While 3D Undergoes Testing, 3rd Eye Offers Best Accuracy
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. According to the Science Daily, current colonoscopy methods reduce the risk of death from colon cancer by about 50%. Colonoscopies performed by gastroenterologists have a higher percentage at 65%. As an award-winning, double board-certified Beverly Hills colonoscopy doctor, Dr. Berookim follows all the latest developments in his field of specialization. Currently, he uses the most advanced equipment available to detect adenomas (precancerous lesions) with the highest level of accuracy. At this time, 3rd Eye Colonoscopy has the best track record for polyp detection, finding 23% more adenomas than a regular colonoscopy.
