Of all the possible body ailments that we have to worry about these days, the kidneys are often the most neglected. This may be because many of us know very little about what the kidneys actually do.
Essentially, the kidneys help to filter the waste products from our bodies. When our kidneys are working properly, they can rid the body of nasty chemicals and toxins at a much faster rate. As a result, we are less susceptible to other infections and diseases. A Beverly Hills gastroenterologist has put together a list of three secret foods that can boost kidney functions.
1. Garlic
Garlic is a wonder-spice that is well known as a powerful antioxidant, but it is also a wonderful food that provides antifungal, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties as well. This means that by eating foods spiced with garlic, we are less likely to contract simple viruses that cause such common ailments as the common cold or flu. The organic compound of allicin found in garlic is also used to treat both high blood pressure and diabetes.
2. Watermelon
Who doesn’t love watermelon? Well, now you have a reason to eat a bit more of this summer fruit. But don’t go overboard. Watermelon is high in sugar, which can result in some other negative health problems. But watermelon is also very high in alkaline water, and everyone knows that water is always good for the body and for improved kidney and digestive health.
3. Asparagus
Although it may not be our favorite vegetable to eat, asparagus has been used for thousands of years as a type of almost magical “healing food” in many cultures. It helps to improve urinary and renal output while also helping to purify the blood. This vegetable also helps to better manage the acids and salts that tend to build up in the kidneys over time, resulting in a better functioning digestive system as a whole.
